Rogue River Press Kit

The beautiful McKenzie River Valley is a 68-mile long corridor stretching between Sisters, Oregon on the east and Springfield, Oregon on the west. The McKenzie River starts at Clear Lake, formed some 3,000 year ago when lava from nearby Sand Mountain dammed up a free-flowing stream. From this point, the river tumbles down the steep mountain through fern-lined rapids and over two large waterfalls. Then, it disappears into the cracks of another lava field, resurfacing three miles downstream in a luminous turquoise pool. Eventually, the river spills into the Willamette River north of Eugene near Springfield, Oregon.

The McKenzie River is typically divided into three separate runs but several different access points provide for a variety of options. From Olallie Campground to Paradise Campground is 9 miles of Class III whitewater. This is a beautiful run with consistent gradient--not a run for the timid. From Paradise to Finn Rock Park is an 18-mile Class II float. This run is popular with families that have very small children or folks who are not interested in whitewater thrills. Last from Finn Rock Park to Leaburg Dam is a 15-mile Class II with a few Class III rapids sprinkled throughout the run. With a long season, convenient access to Eugene, great scenery and a couple fun playspots, this is one of the most popular sections of the river.

Floating and fishing the river can be a fun adventure for those prepared for the challenges whitewater can bring. Class II and II rapids, combined with natural hazards such as fallen trees and stumps, require river users to anticipate and scout obstacles and dynamic conditions.

Cold water even during the hot summer months means that rafting and fishing guests need to wear warmer clothing. The McKenzie River is fed by snowpack, thus explaining why the water stays so cold throughout the entire year.

If you are interested in a rafting day trip or fishing trip on the McKenzie, just call us at 1800-214-0579 and we can recommend a qualified outfitter.
